THIS YEAR IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION 2018-2019
Can’t believe it’s the end of the year
Now it is June and Field Day is near
We made friends and watched our bodies grow
We worked hard but smiles always seemed to glow
We made new friends and exercised a ton
We always worked hard but it was always had fun
We learned how to throw catch and even jump rope
Not one student gave up, never, nope
We did push-ups, sit-ups and relay races
Each student tried so hard, sweat on their faces
We learned hockey, basketball, kickball volleyball too
Our students learned hand-eye coordination, they even caught and threw
The school year went so fast, but the memories will always last
It was definitely a year to remember
Have a great summer and see you in September!!!!!

PHYSICAL EDUCATION MAY 2019
We are looking forward to the warmer weather that is hopefully coming soon, but we are looking even more forward to our TWO-day carnival next week. Next Thursday and Friday May 9th and 10th the PTA will be holding its carnival day for the whole school. This gives all students a break from the hard work they have been doing all year and an opportunity to have some stress-free bouncy house fun.
As we close in on the end of our baseball unit, we will be beginning our volleyball unit which will be fun for all grades. Students will be using grade appropriate soft floating balls that will stay in the air longer which will allow a greater chance for all students to participate and work on their hand eye coordination. We will be looking to see how long we can keep the ball in the air and younger grades will be working on their counting skills as well.
We will also begin our preparation for field day which is June 12th this year. All students will be prepped on the games and activities that come with the day, that will be in next months newsletter. We hope everyone is having a great school year and look forward to what next month will bring
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Ms. Silverstone or Mr. Dessereau. See you in June and hopefully warmer and sunnier weather!!!!

Happy Spring Everyone!!!!
Before anything else is mentioned P.S 177 just received its MOVE-TO-IMPROVE 2018-2019 ALL STAR SCHOOL AWARD and it will be on the banner hanging above the main entrance you can see as you leave the building. This is our second consecutive year earning this prestigious award and a huge thank you to the entire PS 177 family and community.
It is finally warming up and that means we get to begin our baseball/kickball units. We are super excited to enjoy the warm weather and all of the fun activities that come with it. Students can begin to have P.E outside on really nice days to get a break from being inside the gym.
Students will begin practicing throwing underhand and striking a ball with a paddle in grades K-1 to prepare themselves for upper grade activities which will be striking a ball but with overhand throwing and catching. The younger grades will practice running the bases while reinforcing counting numbers and realize where each base is and how we need to run in a specific order. We will be also be bringing back a classic with several parachute games for the younger grades to enjoy before Spring Break arrives.
The older grades will also take part in baseball/kickball activities but the goal for them is to participate in an actual baseball game as well as a modified kickball game called basekickball where they will need to score a basket in a hoop before the kicker runs all of the bases. Students are still participating in some fun group games that have them thinking as well as moving and using multiple skills at once.
We wish everyone a great month of April and a fantastic, fun and safe Spring Break!!!!!!

PHYSICAL EDUCATION MARCH 2019
Happy March Everyone!!!!
As February concluded so did our hockey unit and we are beginning to speed into jump rope and a few group games. All grades will either be learning how to jump, skip, hop rope or perfecting their already learned skills.
BUT…Before we jump into our jumping rope unit, we are bringing back a classic with our own version of Hungry Hungry Hippos with scooters and having students use their teamwork, communication and strategy skills. Students will work in teams to try to collect as many balls as they can for their team just as we used to do as kids!!!
Students will be using pool noodles, jump ropes, hula hoops and any other equipment we can find to help these young jumpers practice their coordination and endurance. Students will be working in groups at different jumping stations where they can choose to work independently or with a friend to develop their skills and self-assess their progress. We will also try to squeeze in a group game in between units before we start baseball!!
Please come by and discuss any concerns or questions you may have during PTC or just come say hello, we would love to see and hear from you.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Mr. Dessereau or Ms. Silverstone. See you in April and hopefully warmer weather!!!!

PHYSICAL EDUCATION FEBRUARY 2019
As the school year continues to speed past us, our students are continuing their amazing growth and development. Students had a blast participating in our various tag games. As we move on to soccer and hockey, students will need to work on combining two skills to accomplish a goal…
This month, students in all grades will be participating and learning how to play soccer and hockey. The lower grades will learn and focus on the use of their feet rather than their hands to participate in some independent soccer practice as well as group work with dribbling and goal kicking skills. The upper grades will further develop their dribbling and kicking skills but also need to pay attention to detail as will play “Line Soccer” and “Crab Soccer”.
As we move into hockey (all equipment is age appropriate and foam) students in all grades will learn and develop how to hold a hockey stick. They will also learn how to dribble a ball and how to compare dribbling in the different sports we have covered thus far. Students will work in pairs to practice controlling the puck/ball as well as work independently to self-assess. We will also engage in fun activities such as scooter hockey and noodle hockey where students will use pool noodles rather than hockey sticks to add fun and creativity while developing different muscle groups and coordination.
As the weather gets colder, students can bring a change of sneakers and can change for their P.E class and change back once the period is over. Sneakers provide students with comfort as well as safety when participating in class. If students are not prepared, they will not be able to participate, and we do not want anyone to miss out on the fun and exciting times we have.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Mr. Dessereau or Ms. Silverstone. See you in March!!!!

WE HOPE EVERYONE HAD A RESTFUL AND ENJOYABLE WINTER BREAK AND HEALTHY BEGINNING to the new year. As we enter the new year, students will be preparing for the final six months of the school year.
This month, students in all grades will be participating and learning about how to play “tag” and learn different and safe variations of the activity. Students in lower level grades will learn how to dodge and move in different directions while engaging in simple tag activities such as Cross My Ocean. Upper grades must come up with strategies and work together in more complex tag activities like Elves, Giants and Wizards. All students are having a great time and have shown a great deal of cooperation and team work.
Fourth and fifth grade students will begin their FitnessGram push-up assessment, they are practicing and improving with every time we see them and are more than ready to excel at the challenge.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
DECEMBER 2018
While December is a short month, a lot has to get done. Fourth and fifth graders have been working hard all year for the FitnessGram Curl-Up assessment that has begun to be administered. The results have been excellent so far and all of the students hard work and dedication is showing in a great way.
We are beginning to teach the younger grades how to properly run a relay race and the use of a baton. Students are having a great time working together and cheering each other on. We are going to be using different movement skills to complete their relay races, some familiar movements such as running and jogging and some new movements such as galloping and side sliding.
The older grades are also engaging in relay races but with more steps and using different equipment such as jumping through a hula hoop to a designated location and dribbling a basketball back to their team. They are being asked to use different skills and at times combine the skills they have learned.
We have also began basketball try-outs for this years team and have been very excited with the results, students are working very hard and putting in a lot of effort and it is going to be an exciting year for the 2018-2019 Mustangs.
Move To Improve has been working beautifully in classrooms and we hope it is incorporated at home as well. With your help, we can continue to be an ALL-STAR school. Move to Improve is a great way to have students move while completing their homework and students love it as much as we do!!!!! Please feel free to visit the Move To Improve section on our page where you can learn all about MTI (Move To Improve) and even have access to important MTI information.
WE HOPE EVERYONE HAS A SAFE AND ENJOYABLE HOLIDAY AND A GREAT START TO A NEW YEAR.
CHRISTMAS BREAK DECEMBER 24th - JANUARY 1st
SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!!!!!
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
NOVEMBER 2018
We have had such a busy and exciting October, it is hard to believe it is already November and the students are very much involved and taking ownership of their Physical Education class. Students are beginning to lead the warm-ups and are doing an amazing job with the FitnessGram assessments that are currently taking place. We are in the middle of assessing fourth and fifth grade for the trunk lift, which is a flexibility assessment.
We have just completed our jumping unit, the students really hopped to it when it came to jumping in different directions, such as lateral, vertical and horizontal.
We have just begun our basketball unit which will focus on students hand and eye coordination. The younger grades are working on catching and throwing using 2 hands as well as bouncing a ball while stationary and moving slowly in a forward direction. Students can bounce (dribble with either one hand or two)
The older grades are focusing on chest passing and bounce passing as well as adding dribbling to their basketball routine. Students will then combine these newly learned skills and take part in different activities such as Dribble Tag and Hoop Tag. Students will also work in pairs and individually to self-adjust their skill development. Students are really enjoying themselves this year and the best is yet to come!!!!
If there are any questions please stop by the gym in the basement and talk to us.

OCTOBER 2018
Grades K-2...Students are adjusting beautifully to another exciting school year. Classes come down to the gym with smiles and an eagerness to take on the days activities with a smile and a willingness to learn. We have been working on grouping with students while finding out their favorite colors, sports, shapes and animals while showing them how to make Independent decisions. The month of October will find us continuing our work on grouping as well as incorporating different loco-motor skills and moving around in different directions, of course we will be doing all this while listening to our favorite KidzBop songs. Students will also continue to have their height and weight taken as per Fitnessgram.
Grades 3-5...The upper grades of PS 177 have shown both confidence and determination in the beginning of the school year. Students have their floor spots memorized which leads to more activity time. We are working on independent decision making and grouping using a deck of cards and paring up students using different colors, suits and numbers. We enjoy incorporating math skills and problem solving into our lessons to keep students focused. For the month of October, we will be practicing for the Fitnessgram Sit and Reach assessment as well as ice breakers that will incorporate grouping where students will make new friends as well as build on existing friendships. Students will work on their loco-motor skills, coordination and balance.
